Andania

Date Lost: 27/01/1918

The Cunard liner Andania was torpedoed by a German submarine 2 miles NNE of Altacarry lighthouse on the morning of the 27th January 1918. Seven men were killed. The rest of the crew were taken off by other vessels in the area. An attempt was made to take the stricken vessel in tow but she was sinking so quickly that this had to be abandoned. This was not the first time that the Andania had been attacked by a submarine in the Mediterranean. On that occasion the timely intervention of her destroyer escort saved her. The Andania was armed for defensive purposes only, If the position where the Andania sank is correct, the water there is so deep that it would leave it outside the realm of the sport diver.
