Brothers

Date Lost: 05/12/1874

The brigantine Brothers was wrecked on the east side of the island during a westerly gale. She was trying to seek the shelter of the Arkill Bay anchorage when she ran aground on the rocks at Maddagalla Point. There was a heavy swell running at the time, so she quickly broke up. Five of the crew managed to make the shore but two were drowned. The Brothers was built in 1860 and had a full cargo onboard at the time of her loss.

Diving information – The Brothers was wrecked on the point opposite the wreck of the Lochgarry. nothing has been found from the wreck but a thorough search of the are has never been carried out. Currents over the site are quite slack, the bottom is covered in quite dense kelp and the depth is around 4/6 metres Visibility is usually good.
