HMS Brisk

Date Lost: 02/10/1917

HMS Brisk was one of the destroyers escorting convoy HH 24 north of Rathlin on the morning of 2nd October 1917 when the Drake was torpedoed. HMS Brisk was then deployed to escort some of the dispersed merchant ships through Rathlin Sound. When she was about one and a half miles SW of Bull Point she was hit by a torpedo forward of the bridge, the explosion blowing the ship in two. The bow section sank immediately taking with it 31 of the crew, but the stern section remained afloat and was towed to Derry.

It has been stated that Brisk hit a mine but islanders watching from the clifftops state that they saw the conning tower of a submarine shortly before Brisk was hit. It was about half an hour before this that the Lugano was torpedoed in the same vicinity. HMS Brisk was built in 1910 by John Brown Shipbuilders in Glasgow.

Diving information – The bow section of the Brisk is lying in approximately 42 metres, 1.5 miles SW of Black Head (Church Bay). So far the wreck has not been dived but there are strong indications that there is a wreck in this area because local lobster fishermen have fouled pots on a wreck here and it has shown up on echo soundings. There can be little doubt that if it is a reck it is the Brisk. The current runs quite strong over the area but there is quite a good slack on the turn of the tide. however, before carrying a search of the area, one should consult those with local knowledge on the tides.
