Lindron

Date Lost: 30/09/1891

On the 9th September 1891 the barque Lindron (936 tonnes) of Egersund Norway, sailed from West Hartlepool for Monte Video with a cargo of coal. When off the north of Scotland she encountered a gale and sprang a leak. The captain tried to get as far as Greenock but was unable and when off Ballintoy, he threw up signals of distress. The coastguards from that station at once went to his assistance and advised the captain to beach his vessel in Church Bay, Rathlin Island. The sea was fairly smooth with little surf on the shore. After the Lindron was beached in Church Bay, an attempt was made to stop the leak but to no avail. About a week later it was decided to abandon her as a total loss. The underwriters entered into a contract with the owners of the SS Glenshesk to remove everything moveable from the barque to a place of safety. The Glenshesk was owned by the Ballycastle Shipping Co. Ltd.
