The Marion Hendry was on a voyage from Londonderry to Irvine with a cargo of burnt ore, just off Bengore she was caught in a severe WNW gale and became trapped in Church Bay. Her anchor did not hold and she was thrown onto the reef at the back of the old Post Office pier. Her cargo of burnt ore was spilled along the shore killing all the shellfish life in the area of Church Bay, much to the horror of the islanders as limpets were part of their staple diet. For this reason alone, the wreck of the Marion Hendry was remembered on the island. She was a vessel 34 years old having been built in 1850.
Diving information – The Marion Hendry was wrecked only a few metres from the Secret. Two very large boulders can be seen on the rocks just below the public toilets which are purported to be ballast stones from the wreck. Nothing has been found that can be identified as coming from the wreck. Currents and depths are the same as that for the Secret.
