Pintail

Date Lost: 05/03/1949

The Pintail was bound for Fleetwood from the Donegal fishing grounds with a heavy cargo of fish when she ran onto rocks at Bull Point.  There was a gale force north-westerly wind with driving sleet and snow.  The first knowledge of the wreck was when the alarm was raised by the lighthouse keeper at the west lighthouse after he spotted the Pintail on the local lifesaving crew who set out for the scene of the wreck with the lifesaving apparatus.  When they arrived at the scene, they discovered one of the crew were rescued by the lifesaving team, although an attempt was made by the Portrush lifeboat to get alongside the wreck but to no avail due to the numerous rocks in the area and the heavy swell.  The survivors were picked up by the lifeboat in Church Bay later that day after having been fed and given warm clothing by the islanders.  The Rathlin lifesaving team was awarded the Board of Trade shield for their part in the rescue.  This was the second time they won the award the first being for the rescue of the crew of the Shackleton on the 1st March 1930.
