When first discovered by islanders, the Raven was lying at anchor in Cooraghy Bay, just east of Bull Point. She was riding out a westerly gale at the time. The Raven had been on passage from an English port to Sligo with a cargo of coal. During the day, her anchor broke but before her spare anchor could be let go, she was carried onto the rock at the point of Black Head. Here she was trapped for some time before the tide turned and carried her off the rock. By this time, she was leaking badly and as she drifted towards Church Bay, her second anchor was let go. Her signals of distress were spotted by the islanders and two fishermen put out from the shore in a small rowboat. All the sailors couldn’t be taken off at the same time as the boat was too small, so on the first run they rescued five and then went back for the other four. The Raven was now very low in the water and just about to sink. Before the remaining crew members could be got on board the Raven went down, taking the rescue boat with her as it had been moored alongside and there wasn’t time to cut the rope. Another boat put out from the shore and managed to pick up two of the seamen but there was no sign of the brave fishermen.
The Raven sank in the middle of O’Bierne Bay. Recently a large anchor has been found in this area, but no other wreckage has been seen.
