Very little is known about the wreck of the Saracen, other than she broke up a few days after she ran aground and that all of her crew were saved (how many is not known). There was a lot of acrimony between the islanders and the people from the Ballimote area on the mainland, when the mainlanders unsuccessfully tried to claim some of the better pieces of wreckage between the two parties which was soon stopped when the landlord of the island arrived on the scene and claimed all the wreckage in his name. Most of the wreckage was removed to his store, thence to be cup up and sold back to the islanders for house building. Then name board of the Saracen can be seen in McCuaig’s pub on the island.
Diving information – The wreck of the Saracen lies on the first point after you pass the Bull Rock. Very little remains other than bits of crockery, lead piping, copper sheathing and the usual copper fastenings. Nevertheless, it is still a very interesting dive as you never know what you will turn up. You can dive this wreck almost anytime as there is no current in the gullies and the depth is no more than 4 to 6 metres. Some of the timber from the wreck can still be seen on the seabed wedge under the larger rocks. There is quite a heavy covering of kelp on the bottom. It is also prone to sudden swell.
