Sail to Rathlin Island on your small boat or yacht

Rathlin Island sits just six miles off the beautiful north Antrim Coast, and is a fabulous destination for a trip on your own small boat or yacht.

With its sea cliffs and waters designated a Special Protection Area, it is a haven for bird and marine life.

Sail here during the summer to see the sea alive with birds – from Eider Ducks and Shags to Gannets and Guillemots – and you might even be lucky enough to hear the rare Corncrake from your boat.

If you are planning to sail to Rathlin Island, read below for information, tips and advice.

Accessing Rathlin Island

The northernmost point of Ireland, Rathlin Island is 6 miles from Ballycastle, 12 miles from the Mull of Kintyre, and 25 miles from Port Ellen, Islay.

Rathlin Harbour is situated in the north-east corner of Church Bay, and provides good shelter clockwise from north-west to south-east winds.

There are three secure pontoons, sheltered by a south and west breakwater. They can hold up to 40 vessels. Rafting is recommended during busier times, such as the summer months.

To enter the harbour, the SCM marks the sight of the wreck of the HMS Drake. This starts the approach through the breakwater. There is a sector light to guide you safely through the entrance at night.

There is also an inner harbour – this is used by the Rathlin Ferry and working vessels.

Staying safe

The waters around the north coast can be challenging and demanding. But if you get the tides and winds right, it is a very satisfying sail.

When entering and leaving Rathlin Island, keep in mind the harbour entrance is shallow on the side of the south breakwater. There are also substantial tidal races around the island to be aware of.

The island is busy with tourists during the summer months – so please be conscious of ferry traffic.

Deep draft vessels

Water depth at the pontoons is 2.2m, which is ample for many small boats and yachts. If you have a deeper draft vessel, please get in touch with the Harbour Master on the number at the top of this page.

Deep draft vessels should berth at the ends of Pontoons A and B – and watch your depth sounder.

There are two anchorage locations for large draft vessels. One is off the West breakdown, and another is just inside Rathlin harbour.

Pontoon facilities

Rathlin harbour is part of Causeway Coast And Glens Council Marina. However it does have a local Harbour Master in the harbour office for further information.

Payments can be accepted in the harbour office, though there is an honesty box if the office is unattended.

Your berthing fee includes water and electricity on the pontoons. Public toilets and showers are available on the beach, just at the end of the pontoons. Here you will also find waste and recycling facilities.
