Looking for a family day out, a Valentine’s weekend escape, or an adventure into a world of culture and lore? Pack your coat along with your curiosity and make the short ferry ride to Rathlin—Northern Ireland’s only inhabited offshore island. Discover a festival that blends research, science, art, heritage and community, all set in one of the most breathtaking places in Northern Ireland.
The festival is co-organised by the Rathlin Development & Community Association, the LIFE Raft project (working to save Rathlin’s wildlife from invasive non-native species), RSPB NI, and the Future Island–Island project—an innovative collaboration of scientists and designers exploring how Rathlin can chart a course for sustainable islands.
“The Science Festival on Rathlin is a chance to experience the island’s unique blend of science, heritage, and community. This year we’re excited to launch our new oral history book, Resilient by Nature, and host the innovative Human Library, where visitors can hear islanders’ stories and insights. Alongside creative workshops, wildlife walks, and lighthouse tours, these events offer an opportunity to discover Rathlin through its people.”
“As the NI Science Festival continues to grow its presence across Northern Ireland, we are delighted to bring another vibrant and engaging programme of events to Rathlin Island in 2026. Rathlin remains a truly special place with its breathtaking landscapes, unique wildlife, rich heritage and strong community spirit that make it an inspiring backdrop for exploring the wonders of science. I encourage everyone to make the short journey and experience firsthand the magic of Rathlin during the festival. It promises to be an unforgettable celebration of curiosity, creativity and scientific discovery.”
“Future Island–Island has been extended by its funding body, the Arts & Humanities Research Council, to work with the community of Rathlin until March 2028. We are ever grateful to the wider community for their support, engagement, and trust as we deepen this collaboration. The Science Festival continues to be an important platform to share the experience of this exciting co-design project on the island and across Northern Ireland, exploring the green transition.”
“We’re absolutely thrilled that RSPB NI is part of this year’s Science Festival on Rathlin. It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase the island’s incredible wildlife and rich heritage through these exciting events—from exploring the West Lighthouse to guided walks with local experts, and a special talk on the elusive corncrake. These experiences highlight the vital conservation work happening here and invite people to connect with nature in a truly unique setting.”
“LIFE Raft is a pioneering, ambitious island restoration project. We’re excited to share progress so far as part of NISF 2026 and showcase the action taken by LIFE Raft and the wider Rathlin community to restore the unique nature on this incredible island.”
